For something completely different, come along to the Halls Gap oval and try playing petanque. Petanque is a French game and has been described as lawn bowls on gravel. It’s a great game and beginners can often triumph over more experienced players. Players take it in turns to throw their boules closest to the cosh (jack).
The Grampians Petanque Club has a social competition every Saturday at 2pm at the Halls Gap oval and visitors are always welcome. It is not unusual to have international guest players who are visiting the Grampians.
There is a nominal $2 charge to play, and a gold coin donation will get you a cuppa and some afternoon tea. You can’t beat that for value!
The Grampians Pétanque Club Inc. was established in 2002 by a group of enthusiasts in nearby Moyston and relocated to Halls Gap,Victoria, Australia in 2004. The impressive floodlit “Boule-o-Drome” was officially opened in March 2005.
Located beside the community sports pavilion at the Halls Gap oval, the piste is just 400m from the town centre. Encircled by the grandeur of the Grampians National Park, it is arguably the most scenic pétanque venue in Australia. Visitors are cordially invited to use our facility at any time, free of charge, and boules are available for loan if you left yours at home!
In October 2013, a second piste was built just metres from the existing facility, but in the more traditional French “terrain naturel” style. The new piste doubles the playing capacity at Halls Gap!
Come along and give it a try. Bring along the family or your friends. You’re guaranteed to meet some of the locals and have a very enjoyable afternoon.
